Looking Up by Sarah Ramos

In today’s modern world, technology is becoming a huge part of our daily lives. So much of our lives relies on technology and its only increasing. Often, people can be seen walking around without even looking up from their phones. Now imagine, years into the future, nobody has to look up from their phones because auto-cars and segways automatically drive people around order from place to place. Paying attention to their surroundings has become unnecessary. Everyone simply trusts these devices to get them around safely so that they never need to look up from their phones. But is this really safe?
Looking Up reflects on how reliant on technology people have become and depicts this possible future by following an average 15 year old boy, Arthur, through a seemingly normal day. The audience gets to know Arthur as he begins to go through a normal school day before the conflict arises. Then, he finds out about a series of accidents involving auto-car and segway malfunctions. When their technology becomes unsafe, the characters of Looking Up must find a new way to get around. Looking up sends the message that it is important to pay attention to the world around you.

  7. Very good use of a normal setting to have the story be more relatable . Having the setting be normal help you achieve your second goal very well because it makes the fact that people rely on technology more personal.
